2/28 -- An Explanation.

Just briefly ...

I haven't been posting new entries here for the last few days because I'm having a problem with one of my eyes.

The problem? Well, my vision seems to be deteriorating in my left eye. At a rather rapid pace, yet. That's a problem, right?

I went to an opthamologist this morning. The guy had about five different patients he was seeing at once. First, he gave me a vision test (even though I thought I'd already established that my vision is pretty much fucked in the one eye) and offered me a new prescription for my glasses.

(I was not amused, but I allowed myself to be cowed into believing "Well, he's a doctor -- there's got to be a good reason why he did that, right?" until well after the appointment was over. I think it was around 3:00 when I finally allowed myself to say "Hey, what the fuck was that shit!?")

He also examined the eye and stated that while he didn't think it was an emergency situation, he was referring me to another colleague for a "second opinion."

The "glaucoma" word was raised at one point, but he said he couldn't find anything particularly wrong. Possible "early indications" of glaucoma, but nothing definite. Still wanted me to go see this new doctor, however.

I made the appointment with the second doctor for Friday. The assistant explained that they'll be giving me some more vision tests.

Once again, it didn't sink in until later that I really needed to say, "Whoa. Hold up. I don't need my vision tested. Right eye is fine with glasses. The left eye is totally fucked -- I can make out shapes and colors and some detail in the right lighting. There -- no need to test me. Now would y'all please look at my eye in a little more depth? And oh -- Friday is a long way off, guys"

So anyhow, I got some more numbers to call tomorrow for a third opinion. I'm planning on going to work for at least a little bit. Not sure how that's going to go, since looking at the computer for long periods of time really aggravates my bad eye, and I don't do much except look at the computer at work.

This sucks.

I'm scared.

I don't know whether to be encouraged or alarmed that the first guy didn't find anything wrong. Did he really even know what he was doing in the first place?

(I'm sorry. As you can see, a crisis brings out my inner Beavis and Butthead. "This sucks. Huh huh. Change it!")

On that cheery note, I'm probably going to be posting here sporadically, if at all, for the next few days. Obviously, I'll post a note if I learn anything more, or should this condition spontaneously reverse itself. Maybe a couple of weeks from now, we can all have a laugh over what a little drama queen I can be.

Take care, everyone. I'll try to keep you posted.
